Mike McCoy: Coaching The Chargers Is A Good Fit

Mike McCoy: Coaching The Chargers Is A Good Fit

Posted: Updated:

"It was a good fit". That's what Mike McCoy says about his new job as head coach of the San Diego Chargers. He talked to Steve and Maria about his goals for the upcoming season and how he got the job. McCoy also talks about the team's infamous draft pick, Manii Te'o, why they drafted him, and how he'd better have thick skin in the locker room.

McCoy also explains why he thinks no one will care about T'eo's drama once the season begins. Steve also ribs the coach about how he killed one school's football program.

(FOX 11 / AP) Fullback Le'Ron McClain likes how fast the Chargers do their work under rookie head coach Mike McCoy.

"We're efficient out here running plays," McClain said Thursday after the Chargers finished their mandatory minicamp.  "Everybody gets the same amount of reps. It's just about the tempo of doing it. We switch in and out of personnel so fast, switching in and out of groups and in and out of stations so fast. With him, he wants everything fast. It's getting us better as a team. I'm enjoying it."

The players are off until training camp starts in late July.

"We look pretty good, this offense," McClain said. "I can't wait until we strap it on against Houston and get going that first game so people can see the work we've been putting in. It's only the beginning. We've got a long way to go."

The Chargers are coming off a third straight season of missing the playoffs. They've reshuffled their offensive line after quarterback Philip Rivers was sacked 49 times last year and committed 22 turnovers. Additionally, running back Ryan Mathews has had a fumbling problem.

McCoy said the Chargers are doing certain drills to work on cutting down on the number of turnovers.

"We work the whole football team. It's something we stress," McCoy said. "We'll do drills during training camp. Obviously when you get more pads on you can do some more things. We'll have turnover circuits and everything not only for the offense but for the defense, how to create turnovers. It's a mindset."

All of the spring practices have been in just shorts, jerseys and helmets.
