Bronx house fire spreads

Firefighters battle flames, dangerous temperatures

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The sweltering temperatures made battling a 5-alarm fire that spread to a neighboring building even more difficult for firefighters in the Bronx.

The blaze on Commonwealth Avenue in the Parkchester section of the borough broke out inside a multi-family house at about 3 a.m. on Wednesday.

Four firefighters and two children suffered minor injuries and were taken to Jacobi Hospital, said officials on the scene.

The children were not inside the burning house. They suffered smoke inhalation from across the street.

The flames were out by 7 a.m.

Five families were left homeless.

Two-hundred and fifty firefighters responded to the inferno.  A fifth alarm was called due to the oppressive weather conditions.

"The fifth alarm wastransmitted for relief. Every unit was operating a long time. We can't expectthem to take all those hoses up and do some overhauling when they are in a veryhot condition with all that equipment," said FDNY Chief Ronald Werner

It is not clear what sparked the fire.

Burger chain Five Guys is testing the adage that everything tastes better with bacon. It is rolling out a customizable milkshake program and along with bananas, peanut butter, Oreo cookies, salted caramel, you can chose bacon.  Yes that's right: a bacon milkshake.
