DETROIT (WJBK) -

Detroit will not be the next home for the X Games. ESPN announced Wednesday that Austin, Texas will host the extreme sports event beginning in 2014.

The primary site will be the Circuit of the Americas sports and entertainment complex, which opened last November by hosting the Formula One U.S. Grand Prix.

Austin was chosen over three other finalists: Chicago, Detroit and Charlotte, N.C.

The X Games features events like skateboarding, Moto X and BMX freestyle. It will wrap up an 11-year run in Los Angeles with this summer's event Aug. 1-4. It will be the last of 6 X Games events this year.

The first X Games in Austin will be next May 15-18.

The push to bring the games to the Motor City began with an online campaign created by Kevin Krease and Garret Koehler from Action Sports Detroit LLC. The pair submitted a bid to ESPN earlier this year. Since then, the X Games Detroit Bid Facebook page has received over 17,000 likes and the official X Games Detroit Bid video has been viewed over 270,000 times on YouTube.

Kris Smith with the Detroit Sports Commission didn't let the news get him down. He says the agency is working to bring other big name events to the city.  "It's an opportunity to show what's going right in Detroit," said Smith.
