Stent solution for chronic sinusitis sufferers

Stent solution for chronic sinusitis sufferers

ATLANTA -

If you've struggled with chronic sinus problems, then you know just how tough they can be.

You've got the pressure and the pain and the congestion and, sometimes, even the unrelenting headache. Fear not! A new stent device could bring you some relief.

The same technology with stents used to open up arteries is being used to re-open sinus passages.

Ear, nose and throat specialist Dr. Aaron Rogers says sinusitis is sometimes triggered by nasal allergies. But, for other sufferers, the issue can be a cyst.

Dr. Rogers uses a tiny scaffold-like implant called the Propel to open up blocked sinus tissue. It holds the sinus tissue open, similar to the way a heart stent props open a blocked artery.

Over four to six weeks, it dissolves; gradually releasing an anti-inflammatory medication into the swollen tissue.
