How many of those so-called rewards and loyalty cards do you have either dangling off your key chain or stuffed in your wallet? Do they even help save you money or are they just a marketing ploy to reel in customers?

It's a bit of both, says marketing expert Adam Hanft.

The dual Walgreens and Duane Reade card has saved me some money, so has my Food Emporium card if I buy stuff on sale. Then there are the big retailers that use the loyalty programs to reel customers in.
