A 2-year-old Orange County girl died Wednesday afternoon after a 16-year-old relative in an SUV backed over her in the driveway, troopers say.
The Florida Highway Patrol says the toddler's teen uncle was backing down the driveway on Avalone Drive in Apopka and didn't realize the little girl had moved behind the SUV.
The rear tire ran over Amaris Martinez. She was taken to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, where she died.
"Once he felt the vehicle wobble, he got out and realized that it was his niece and ran to get some help from the family," FHP Cpl. Kristin Newsom said.
The teen, who does not have a license, was moving the SUV to clean the driveway. The family had been preparing to celebrate the girl's second birthday this weekend. The teen has not been charged.
