Coyote sightings common in metro area

DUNWOODY, Ga. -

Wildlife experts say coyote sightings are becoming more common this time of year.

Kathy Maddox said she had a close encounter with a coyote right in front of her neighbor's home  in Dunwoody.

"I saw it standing right there on the sidewalk right in front of their front porch," Maddox said. "It crossed in front of my car and it came right over here and looked at me again and we just stared at each other like, 'Who are you?' and then it sort of trotted off."

Maddox, a dog owner and mother, was concerned.  She says her neighbors have also spotted coyotes.

Wildlife experts say these sighting are not that rare.  They say coyotes are prevalent in the metro Atlanta area, and this time of year they are out more often searching for food for their pups.

"We really advise people to keep their pets either inside or with them when they are outside. it's fine to walk your dog or be outside with your cat, because they see people as predators and don't want anything to do with us," said Linda Potter of Aware Wildlife Center.

Potter says trapping isn't an effective way to get rid of coyotes, because more will come back.

For now, Kathy is going to keep a close eye on her pet.

"They are not going away, they're here, we just have to learn how to coexist with them but that doesn't help when you have a little dog. It's still a little bit unsettling," said Maddox said.

Wildlife experts also say that not leaving out garbage and other food sources can help keep coyotes away, and if you do spot one at your home, you can clap and make noise to scare it away.
