Counterfeit $10 bills circulating in Polk County, police say

POLK COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -

More "funny money" is circulating in Polk County, authorities say.

Lake Wales Police say fake $10 bills are making the rounds. A couple of businesses, including a gas station and a store in a shopping mall, have been tricked three times this week, they said.

Lt. David Black said the counterfeiters are using smaller bills this time, because higher-denomination bills are more likely to be checked. The $10 bills may not get a second glance, he said.

But although the $10 bills look real, they feel phony, Black told Fox 13 in Tampa Bay.

"These are not real bills. Whether it is a laser jet or an ink jet, these are just on decent paper," he said.

Police say quick transactions, such as those at a counter, make it easy for counterfeiters to pass off the fake money.

The fake $10 bills are the latest in a string of counterfeit crimes in Polk County this summer. Last month, a pink-haired suspect was caught on surveillance cameras in Winter Haven passing fake $50 bills to at least six businesses.

"People like to come this way, commit their crimes and then leave because of anonymity," Black said.
