New Yorkers looking for a break from the extreme heat

Posted: Updated:

The temperature on Saturday proved too much for some people who lost their power and for them, relief from the heat wave cannot come soon enough.

"I feel like I can finally breathe again.”

It is a night when the sight of ominous storm clouds was enough to put a smile on your face with the thunderstorms rolling in, finally breaking the seven-day heat wave that’s scorched the tri-state.

People out for a Saturday stroll in Long Island City were enjoying the breeze.

But this heat wave didn't go out with a whimper. On Friday, Con Edison set an all-time power usage record as temperatures soared to dangerous levels, even on Saturday, there were pockets of problems with utility companies throughout our region reporting as 7,500 customers were without electricity.

With the power out on 147th Street in the Whitestone section of Queens, neighbors like Howard Johnston could only watch, wait and hope – the day without air conditioning, simply miserable.

"I just drink a lot of water and keep hydrated."

"It’s awful, it’s awful."

Across the river in New Jersey, parts of Bergen County continue to have power problems. Generators could be seen operating traffic lights back on 147th Street in Queens and some found relief in the pool, and a utility team repaired that line.

Back on the pier, one couple was taking it all in. Hoping the relief wasn’t short-lived.
