Resident busts burglars in Atlantic Station luxury condo

Posted: Updated:

An Atlanta man tells FOX 5 News he walked in on armed burglars as they tried to rob his condo on Sunday, and he is being credited with helping police track them down.  The two suspects have now been arrested, and investigators say one of them lives in the same Atlantic Station luxury condo building where the crime took place.

The victim, who does not want his name released, said he and his 11-year-old daughter came home to his 10th floor unit around 5 p.m. to find the door open.  He says he found a suspect inside, and grabbed his gun.

The man chased the suspect into the stairwell.  Another man was found hiding in the bathroom inside the unit, and he was taken into custody.  Officers eventually caught up with the other suspect, who was also arrested.

Building management notified other residents to stay in their units until the situation was resolved.

The victim tells FOX 5 that about $2,000 was taken during the burglary.

Authorities identified the suspects as Antwan Bell and Thomas Simmons. Both men are graduate students – Bell at Clark Atlanta University and Simmons and Georgia State University.

Police said that Simmons lived in the building. They are looking to see if he has been involved in any other crimes in the area.

Atlantic Station residents tell FOX 5 that crime is up at the development. Atlanta police said that this year, there has been one aggravated assault, four stolen cars, Sunday's attempted burglary and the theft of the lobby's ATM as well as six larcenies.

There were only two crimes reported in 2012.

Sunday's crime victim said that the latest crime was enough to make him want to move out of the property.
