SANFORD, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -

The City of Sanford plans to add some public parking in its downtown, but thespaces will be for boats along Lake Monroe.  Mayor Jeff Triplett says it isimportant to give boaters the opportunity to stop for the afternoon and parkfor free.

"We thought it was important because of the riverway going all the way upto Jacksonville.  A lot of people travel it every day."

Triplett says 10 marina slips will be built with the intention of getting morevisitors to Downtown Sanford.

"This just opens up another opportunity to get to our downtown, to get toSanford and enjoy the atmosphere."

State and county boating grants will provide most of the $350,000,plus another $30,000 for contingencies.  Mayor Triplett says without thestate and county money, there is no way the city could afford the project.

"I don't think we could do it on our own, and I wouldn't suggest that wedo that. This has been a long time in the process, working on grants with thestate and with the waterway commission."

The 11th slip will be for a PTF boat. The PTF boat is a military craft that wasthe next generation of the famous PT boats. They were used heavily during theVietnam War. That boat will be parked right next to Veterans Memorial Park. Thehope there is also to draw visitors.
