An elementary teacher is out of jail after her arrest on drug charges.

Kimberlyn Witt, 48, is a third grade teacher at Lake Mary Elementary School. She has been placed on administrative leave following her arrest. She is charged with possession of cocaine, possession of marijuana, possession of a controlled substance without prescription, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to an arrest report, Witt was in a car with Martyn Dennis, 61, when Seminole County Sheriff's deputies pulled him over after smelling a strong scent of marijuana coming out of the car.  Investigators said there were drugs in Witt's purse. An arrest affidavit states she also told the deputy she had a vial of cocaine hidden in her bra.

No one answered the door at Witt's home in Sanford. According to a Seminole County School District spokesman, the superintendent will first ask the School Board to suspend Witt with pay, then recommend at a later meeting "that her employment be terminated."

"You expect them to be law-abiding and patient and a good person," said parent Jenny Kassner of teachers. "It makes me feel insecure about where my kids are going to school and makes me want to send my kids to private school."

Parent Chantell Clark echoed those concerns, saying, "It makes me upset, because they shouldn't be allowed to be around our children like that. They should be screened more for those type of things."

Paula Olsen said her grandchild will be starting at Lake Mary Elementary this year.

"I think the people that are teaching should be above that kind of behavior," she said. "There should be some kind of random screening in place to prevent the use of drugs by teachers."

According to the school district, employees are drug-tested when hired, but otherwise, they are only tested if they are suspected of using drugs.

Witt has been with the Seminole County School District since 1991. She has had no prior complaints.

Dennis was charged with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Both have bonded out of jail.
