Compton, CA -

(FOX 11 / CNS) A deputy shot and killed a 42-year-old man who bit him and tried to grab his gun during a struggle following a traffic stop in Compton this morning, authorities said.

The shooting happened around 12:25 a.m. in the 1300 block of Long Beach Boulevard near Pauline Street, said Deputy Peter Gomez of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, Gomez said. His body was visible lying on the south side of the road, according to a news photographer.

The deputy, who fired three shots at the suspect, was taken to hospital, where he was treated for a minor injury and released, Lt. Eddie Hernandez of the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau told reporters at the scene.

Sheriff's Homicide Bureau detectives were sent to investigate the shooting, which will also be investigated by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office and the county Office of Independent Review, as is standard in such cases.

A witness reported that the suspect was driving erratically and was possibly intoxicated, prompting the traffic stop, according to a broadcast report.
