DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

Detroit's new police chief has some new ideas to get criminals off the streets and spent time on Thursday discussing those strategies.

"I'm calling the good people of Detroit to action. This is our city, not the small number of violent predators who are out here engaging in violence, shooting innocent people in cars. That will stop," said Detroit Police Chief James Craig.

The chief also talking about how he plans to curb violence in the city while releasing new crime stats. There's been a 7 percent reduction in homicide from a year ago today, violent crime is down 4 percent.

To keep up the trend, Craig wants to focus on carjacking in the coming months. "This is the one thing that drives fear. I mean, I understand the non fatal and certainly one homicide is one too many. but when you can't even drive safely in the city you call home, that you might get carjacked and then shot. It's one thing to just take the car, take the car, but then you shoot the victim. We're going to put a stop to that."

Chief Craig also continued to shuffle manpower to get the right number of men and women in places they're needed most. 175 officers are being reassigned to work the street, instead of Special Ops.

Craig is also reintroducing a city-wide mobile unit to attack hot spots. Perhaps the most significant Chief Craig addressed today, police response times. Starting next week, the department will change how it categorizes priority calls.

Another change being made by the chief, as of Sunday 'Virtual Precincts' are no longer in effect and every available police station is now open 24/7.
