I-Team: Top auto theft targets, how not to become a victim

Posted: Updated:

What can you do in 44 seconds? It doesn't seem like a lot of time. But a new study from the U.S. federal government claims that every 44 seconds a vehicle is stolen.

Georgia is one of the top 10 states for auto theft and it just so happens that this is the peak season -- July and August -- for the crime.  Fear not! Fox 5 Consumer Reporter Dana Fowle has what you need to know to protect yourself.

A study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says about half the time the car owner and/or driver is partly to blame.  Driver error can really leave a vehicle vulnerable to theft.  But, you can likely cut your risk of becoming a victim by following these simple steps.

Park your car in a well-lit area. When you can, use your garage and close that garage door.

Make sure the windows are rolled up and don't leave packages or valuables where they can be seen.  If you have to, lock them in the trunk.

According to the NHTSA report, thieves have some favorite cars to steal.  Here are the top 5 most popular:

The Dodge Charger
The Pontiac G-6
The Chevy Impala
The Chrysler 300
Infiniti FX 35

And, just because your vehicle isn't on the list, doesn't mean you aren't in the clear. You still need to be smart and take steps to keep yourself from becoming a target.

And this may sound really obvious, but don't leave your keys in the car.  New electronic keys make it really tricky because you don't need the key to turn off the car, you can easily forget to take the key with you.
