FOX 29 Getting Results: Illegally Dumped Tires

PHILADELPHIA -

Folks living near the 3,000 block of Vare Avenue like their neighborhood. At least they did before illegally dumped tires made them frightened prisoners in their own homes. One of them called FOX 29, as a last resort.

An estimated 6,000 tires, illegally dumped at a car repair shop on Vare avenue, provide a breeding ground for mosquitos. It makes life miserable for the folks who live behind it. Steve DeMarco called us.

"It's unbelievable. You can't walk outside. Like, my mother lets the dog outside and there are hundreds of mosquitos in the house instantly," says DeMarco. "It's really frustrating, and you come home every day and you look out your back window and it's just... it turns your stomach."

I called the state Department of Environmental Protection, and found that the DEP had, in March, issued a notice of violation to the owner of the site, Ebrahim Shaji, for illegally storing the tires.

These mountains of tires have gotten smaller, but four months later, there are still lots of tires left. So we paid Mr. Shaji a visit.

He says the tires, 16,000 of them, as of last December, were dumped by a couple of guys who leased part of his property and ran a business disposing of tires for a fee. He says he did not know that those guys were breaking the rules.

"It's the financial burden on me that's killing me..." says Shaji. He claims he's spent a small fortune getting rid of the tires.

As for the neighbors' complaints:

"Can't blame them," he says. "No, not at all; can't blame them. Nobody wants to live in this situation. Nobody."

Then we made a deal.

Shaji promises that within three weeks, the tires will be gone. We promised to hold him up on that offer. Stay tuned to FOX 29 to see if Shaji makes true of his promise.
