Riley Cooper Fallout: What Are The Consequences?

Riley Cooper Fallout: What Are The Consequences?

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Teammates and fans are giving their reactions to Riley Cooper's racist remark and his subsequent public apology.

Cooper made the racial comments at a concert in June, when he got involved in a confrontation with a security guard. Cooper admitted he had been drinking at the time.

After meeting with team owner Jeffrey Lurie, general manger Howie Roseman and coach Chip Kelly this afternoon, Cooper apologized for the remarks.

This is kind of the lowest of lows," he says. "This isn't the type of person I want to be portrayed as. This isn't the type of person I am."

"I'm just extremely sorry," he added.

This morning, Fox 29's Steve Kelley reported live, outside of Eagles Training Camp.  Steve reported that, according to Deadspin.com, the reason why Cooper was fighting with the security guard was because he could not get backstage at the Kenny Chesney concert.

So, what are the consequences for Riley Cooper, other that the immediate fines?

This morning, we invited Gary Cobb and Patt Gallen to discuss Cooper's comments.

The fourth year receiver continued his apology tour after Wednesday's practice, saying sorry to his teammates.

In a statement by the Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie, he said, "We are shocked and appalled by Riley Cooper's words. This sort of behavior or attitude from anyone has no role in a civil society."

The NFL also released a statement, saying "comments like this are wrong, offensive and unacceptable."

Ike Reese, a former Eagles linebacker, tweeted, "Of course I'm not OK with Riley's ignorant moment. But I'm smart enough to know he's not the first and he won't be the last."

But Reese certainly isn't the only one talking.

Former Eagle Hugh Douglas had this to say, "Shout out to Riley Cooper for keepin it 100... At least now we know! "

His current teammates spoke to the press today.

"Still treasure Riley as a teammate. Still love him as a teammate. Still look at him as one of my brothers," says defensive end Fletcher Cox.

"As a teammate, I forgave him. As a team, we forgave him," says quarterback Michael Vick.

But forgiveness is not so easy for some.

Michael Vick's brother Marcus tweeted that he's putting a thousand dollar bounty on Riley's head.

Vick distanced himself from his brother's comments, calling for cooler heads to prevail.

"I don't agree with what my brother is saying. Riley is still my teammate, and he just stood in front of us as a man and apologized for what he said. My brother has to, you know, not show a certain level of ignorance himself," says Vick.

Fans reacted to Riley Cooper's video and apology today.

"Wow! that's brutal," says a fan.

"In his defense, it's a word that gets thrown around too much. It's words like dude or bro in today's culture. But I do think if you're a professional athlete, there has to be some sort of restraint," says another fan.

Riley was fined, but he would only say it was a sizeable amount. Sources are now telling FOX 29 news that the Eagles organization has contacted the DA's office to find out some charitable organization that is Riley can donate to.
