Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy's office is taking a hard look at unsafe sleep situations and lack of adult supervision putting babies and young children at risk. Thursday, Worthy announced charges in five recent cases that killed or nearly killed kids.

Worthy released the following statement:

"Leaving your very young babies and children in unsafe sleep situations or unsupervised in swimming pools, houses, hotels, and hot cars can result in dead children and criminal charges. These are difficult cases, but these children are just as dead as a child shot by a stray bullet or one battered to death."

Terri Lynn-Outhwaite Julite, 32, and Saad Mehdi-Sahib Al-Asadi, 31, of Dearborn Heights have been charged with the death of their infant son. Investigators say the couple was staying at a motel and left their baby in the room next door with his two sisters, ages 12 and nine. On the morning of January 15th, 2013, one of the girls found six-month old the baby lying on his stomach, with a blanket over his head and unable to breathe. The father was already gone. Investigators say the 12-year old girl tried for 15 minutes before she was finally able to get her mother's attention in the room next door. The baby was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Now Julite is charged with second-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter and child abuse second-degree.

Al-Asadi is charged with involuntary manslaughter and child abuse second-degree.

Both are facing up to life in prison if convicted of second-degree murder.

Eleanor N. Crosby is charged with involuntary manslaughter and second-degree child abuse in the death of a baby girl on December 4, 2011. Investigators say the 21 year old was intoxicated when she fed her six-month old daughter and placed the baby in bed with her around 5:00 a.m. When she woke up five hours later, the baby was cold and not moving. Paramedics took the baby to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Prosecutors tell Fox 2 Crosby had previously been taught about safe sleep conditions for babies.

Crosby faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted of involuntary manslaughter.

Aisha Tahir, of Dubuque, Iowa is facing up to a year behind bars on accusations she left her baby alone in a car on June 28, 2013. Police were called to the Walmart on Belleville Road in Van Buren Township after another shopper saw an infant locked in a car with all of the windows closed. Prosecutors say it was 77 degrees that day. Doctors say the baby's temperature was 100 degrees at the hospital. Fortunately, the child survived and was released to a social worker.

Wilma Jean Gissantaner, 51, and Cheneka Gardner, 28, both of Detroit, have each been charged with involuntary manslaughter and child abuse second-degree in the drowning of a five-year old boy at a birthday party. Gardner was hosting the hotel pool party for her daughter. Prosecutors say Gissantaner and Gardner had been drinking alcohol and were sitting in the hot tub, as 15 kids swam in the pool nearby. When Gissantaner got out of the hot tub to round up the kids, she saw the boy floating face down in the pool, not moving. She jumped in and pulled him out. A doctor who was at the hotel performed CPR, but the child never regained consciousness.

Kassie Lyn Laretz is now being charged with involuntary manslaughter and second-degree child abuse in the death of her baby. Investigators say Laretz left her four-month old child alone in a bed, then left her house for 20 minutes to visit a neighbor across the street. When she got back, the baby was unconscious, and she called 911. Prosecutors also tell Fox 2 Laretz was seriously impaired, having taken more than seven types of prescription drugs when she left the baby home alone.

She faces up to 15 year is prison if convicted of involuntary manslaughter.
