GWCC abandons negotiations with church on stadium site

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

The Georgia World Congress Center has abandoned efforts to acquire the preferred site of the new Atlanta Falcons stadium.

Historic Mount Vernon Baptist Church, which sits on the preferred site, rejected an offer of $6.2 for the property.

Without the site, the new stadium cannot be built on the south site of the Georgia Dome.

Earlier this week, the GWCC Authority Board voted to allow the Falcons to start soil testing and other feasibility studies on the alternative site at the corner of Northside Drive and Ivan Allen Jr. Boulevard, which is across from the World Congress Center complex.
