Welcome Home, Joan: Her story of triumph over tragedy

Welcome Home, Joan: Her story of triumph over tragedy

Posted: Updated:

She's a quadriplegic. She has little or no privacy and even has to travel an hour each way just to take a shower. Yet, to the surprise of most, she considers herself incredibly blessed.

Just wait until you see her smile.

After an unspeakable tragedy, Joan Llewellyn has made incredible progress, but she still has a long way to go in order to reach her goals. No one who knows her would dare doubt her, either. Prepare yourself to be inspired, encouraged and educated!

Joan and Harris Haley are buddies at the Shepherd Center ProMotion Fitness Center.

Joan said, "Every week we work together and we've developed a good friendship from there, and he's just an awesome person."

Harris added, "It's really all about coming down and just being here for them when they need somebody here."

"I've come a far way," Joan said, working the hand cycle at the fitness center.

She has indeed come a long way since that tragic morning in her home country of Jamaica. It was April 2011 when Joan's estranged husband – a local police officer – burst into her parents' home with a gun. His action would change her family's lives forever.

"Everything happened in about five minutes. Bam, bam, bam, bam bam! Everybody got shot and killed and I was left for dead," Joan told Good Day Atlanta's Buck Lanford.

Her mother, her father, her brother and her 17-year-old daughter – George-Ann – were killed that morning. Joan's husband then took his own life. Joan lay on the floor – herself shot through her neck – left for dead.

Joan said, "I remember I prayed. I just started praying."
