CHICAGO (Associated Press) -

Nike and the city of Chicago are extending a series of free basketball clinics held in neighborhood parks this summer.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel, former Chicago Bulls player Scottie Pippin and Chicago Park District CEO Michael Kelly announced Saturday that CHI LEAGUE PARKS will continue through the end of the year.

City officials say more than 1,000 young people have participated in the clinics since they began in June.

Emanuel says the clinics "have become an invaluable resource and safe space" for Chicago's youth.

Pippen says he encouraged Nike and the park district to continue the program after seeing firsthand how powerful it is.

The program was designed to prevent violence and give kids a safe, healthy place to play basketball.
