Prosecutors want a judge to set a $9 million bond in the case of a Detroit-area cancer specialist accused of intentionally misdiagnosing patients.

A magistrate judge said Dr. Farid Fata could be released from jail under strict conditions. But the U.S. attorney's office is appealing, saying Fata may flee the country.

In a filing Monday, prosecutors say they want the current $170,000 bond increased to $9 million and that it come from a "legitimate, and not illegitimate, source."

In his filing, defense lawyer Christopher Andreoff requests "a reasonable cash bond that" Fata can post.

Detroit federal Judge Sean Cox will hold a hearing Tuesday.

The government says Fata ripped off Medicare for millions by giving chemotherapy to patients who didn't need it and diagnosing cancer when the illness wasn't apparent.

Sources told Fox 2's Robin Schwartz the case against Fata is expanding. Many people have come forward since this story broke, and the FBI is talking to all of them.

Schwartz was told there could be more charges and possibly even developments later this week.

One Fox 2 viewer said they met with the feds this weekend to share proof that Swan for Life, the charity Fata founded, would accept money in exchange for patient referrals. The foundation posted a statement on their website saying they function independently and are not part of the investigation. Now no one is answering calls, and that statement has disappeared from the website.

Current or former patients of Dr. Fata or concerned family members can reach out to Sandy Palazollo with the U.S. Department of Justice by calling (313) 226-9633 or sending an email to
