LOGANVILLE, Ga. -

More than a dozen airmen walked 140 miles to honor a fallen hero from Loganville.

Major David Gray, 38, was killed last August by a suicide bomber in Afghanistan.

The men Gray commanded were still in combat when the father of three died last year and they couldn't come home for his funeral. So last week, they strapped on their boots for a special farewell.

"They just said it was their way of saying a final goodbye to my brother," said Ronnie Gray, David's brother.

The airmen marched from Dover Air Force Base in Delaware to Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C.

"For those guys to take time out of their lives to honor my brother in that way, it showed me a lot," said Ronnie Gray.  "It showed me that my brother was a tremendous leader, and those guys loved my brother a lot."

They called Major Gray a father figure; many times they told the Gray family how much they admired him. But during their 140-mile march, the last mile was done in silence to show how deeply they felt for their fallen leader.

"I wasn't prepared for it to be as emotional as it was. When I got out there and saw his guys and saw their emotions, it was all I could do to hold back the tears," Ronnie Gray said.

Major Gray's widow and their three young children were in DC and got to meet with the airmen at the end of their march. She told family members that she was glad her children could see how important their father was.
