NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A police officer responding to a 911 call about a home burglary was shot and injured early Wednesday morning on Long Island.

Mohit Arora, 32, a six-year veteran of the Nassau County Police Department, was shot and wounded in the hip, officials said, as he approached a house in New Hyde Park at about 2 a.m. A suspect initially appeared to be surrendering but then turned and fired, police said.

After undergoing surgery, Arora was said to be recovering. Prior to joining the NCPD, he served three years with the NYPD.

Police officers and the suspects exchanged fire and a brief manhunt ensured. Cops caught and arrested two men in connection with the shooting, according to Nassau County Police. It is unclear what charges will be filed.

Officers recovered a 9 mm pistol at the scene.

"I commend Officer Arora and responding Officers who swiftly arrested the perpetrators while protecting our residents," County Executive Ed Mangano said in a statement. "I personally met with Officer Arora and his family at the hospital earlier today and thanked him for his heroic service and offered the support and prayers of Nassau County.

Police had closed off half of New Hyde Park after the shooting around 2 a.m. But a search for any additional suspects ended and police say there is no public threat.

Inspector Kenneth Lack, a police spokesman, said the house in the alleged burglary had been targeted.
