School Funding Battle's Hunger Strike Resumes

PHILADELPHIA -

Time is running out for city leaders to get the Philadelphia School District the money it needs to open on time.

Demonstrators are staging a protest Wednesday morning outside of district headquarters, and a hunger strike that was suspended has resumed, FOX 29's Stacey Stauffer reported.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers will hold a rally at Harding Middle School in Northeast Philadelphia.

Harding is just one of many schools that will not open on time if the district does not get $50 million dollars by Friday.

On Tuesday, state lawmakers urged Gov. Tom Corbett to release $45 million in grant money he already signed off on in June.

But Corbett says he won't hand over the money until the district wins major concessions from its teachers union.

"That hasn't been accomplished yet so the law is clear until that takes place there can be no release," Corbett said.

In the meantime, city leaders are still at odds over where they think the money should come from.

City Council President Darrell Clarke says they will have a plan by Friday.
