Riverside police warn residents about air conditioner thefts

RIVERSIDE, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Riverside police have issued an alert warning residents and businesses in the western suburb about a series of commercial air conditioning unit thefts.

Two commercial air conditioner thefts have occurred in the 200 and 300 blocks of Burlington Street since Tuesday, according to Riverside police.

Suspects usually strike at night and either take entire air conditioning units or damage them and remove parts for copper, police said.

Because of the size and weight of the units, Riverside police believe at least two people are committing the thefts using a truck or SUV, according to the release.

Riverside and River Forest police previously arrested a suspect for similar thefts on Ogden Avenue, but the thefts have continued, according to the release.

Police are asking residents to report any suspicious noise or vehicles, especially near commercial buildings, apartment buildings or condominium complexes.

Anybody with information about the thefts is asked to contact Riverside police at (708) 447-2127.
