TAPE: SP-14  DATE: MAY 1981 SLUG: ERK RUSSELL TO GEORGIA SOUTHERN

As Mercer, Kennesaw State, and Reinhardt prepare to jump into the college football world, they can all take a page out of Georgia Southern's book.  The Eagles re-started their program in 1981 when UGA's defensive coordinator Erk Russell came to Statesboro.  After starting from scratch, Russell quickly had the program playing for and winning national championships.

Today's video is a Bill Hartman package from the day Russell was introduced as the Eagles first head coach in May 1981.  The people down at then Georgia Southern College knew what they were getting.  A hard-nosed coach that would have been the dawg's top choice had Vince Dooley bolted for Auburn.  Here's a link to the media guide from the 1982 season. This video is also timely because the 2013 season will be the final one before the Georgia Southern program takes its next step.  In 2014 the Eagles step up to the Football Bowl Subdivision and the Sun Belt Conference, leaving behind the a level of football they have dominated since the 80's.  It's also fun to look at how GSU's facilities have changed since football came to town.  That first season they played at Statesboro High's Womack Stadium, now they play at Paulson Stadium, which continues to grow. I talked to Bill Hartman this week about this piece and he told me that the crew chartered a plane for the trip down to Statesboro and back.  Oh the budgets on the local news Golden Age.

Our weekly Team of the Week pep rallies are now a staple of High 5 Sports, but they certainly are nothing new to WAGA.  This week's video is a Channel 5 pep rally from December 1982.

Talk radio has blown up this week with criticism of Fredi Gonzalez for not bringing in Craig Kimbrel at the beginning of the 8th inning in game four against the Dodgers.
