Help for a community thanks to a dog named Whitey

DETROIT (WJBK) -

Eddie Grima's best friend is an old dog. Whitey has been his faithful companion for 13 years.

The two have been together since Whitey was a pup living with Grima in his modest apartment, low income housing, on Detroit's southwest side.

"He's my heart and soul," he said. "Unconditional love. Can't ask for much more."

On Sunday, the two were taking a nap on a blanket near their apartment building when Janet Conley spotted them.

"I happened to driving by. I saw him on the side of the road, and I said, 'Oh my gosh, I have to stop,'" she said.

Conley is with C.H.A.I.N.E.D., an organization that helps animals and their owners in southwest Detroit. When she saw Whitey, she just had to help.

"I spoke with Eddie, and I gave him some food, gave him some water, gave him some treats, and I said, 'Let's get him into the vet,'" she said.

That got the ball rolling, so to speak. C.H.A.I.N.E.D. paid for the trip to the vet. His owner unable to afford it, Whitey hadn't been in years.

Whitey was diagnosed with a double ear infection and arthritis. He got some medication, and Conley decided why stop there. Why not help Eddie and the other people who live in his building? Many of them struggle on fixed incomes. She is holding two donation drives this weekend. Canned goods for people or animals, can openers or clothing, she said nothing will go to waste.

"It's actually an amazing thing because not only are we helping Eddie, we're helping a bunch of other people, too. So it's great all the way around," Conley said.

Donation drives are scheduled for Saturday, August 17 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the parking lot of the Walmart on 23800 Allen Road in Woodhaven and on Sunday, August 18 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot of Charlie's Bar at 1503 Springwells in Detroit.

The case was originally about workplace discrimination. Now it's dragged on for more than a decade despite the case appearing to be one that the Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation can't win.
