Firefighters Wanted In Pasadena, Hopefuls Take The Test

Pasadena, CA -

(FOX 11 / CNS) More than 4,000 firefighter trainee hopefuls are expected to take a written exam -- the initial step toward qualifying to train as a Pasadena firefighter -- with only a "small number" of spots available.

The city has not hired firefighter trainees since 2009.

From Hal Eisner:

There are 3,088 aspiring firefighters that won't get jobs with the Pasadena Fire Department. Let me explain. Today, during two testing periods, 4000 people who want to be PFD firefighters are taking initial written tests. Pasadena Fire Chief Calvin Wells says of those 4000 only 12 will end up in the department. This is the first time since 2009 enough people have retired from the department to create any openings. And, for those trying to snag "the few" it's a long drawn-out process that involves weeks of testing and interviews then months of vetting and background checks.

The Chief admits it's a crap shoot, but so is getting in the NBA. Is getting a job as a firefighter like signing on with the Lakers or Clippers? There are some 4000 in Pasadena today who will tell you "YES!" even though the pay for a starting firefighter is just over $4100 a month far less than what Kobe Bryant is getting.
