Police Prepare For Retaliation After 3 Murders, 8 Others Shot

Police Prepare For Retaliation After 3 Murders, 8 Others Shot

PHILADELPHIA -

"We got to stop this foolishness," says Herman Bland, who is one angry grandfather.

His 17-year-old grandson was gunned down in a drive-by shooting Monday night in the 1700 block of Taylor Street in South Philly.

His grandson was one of three people murdered in a 24-hour period to go along with another eight people shot.

"You want to show me something? Do something better than what you're doing," Bland told FOX 29.

"They're putting too many guns into kids' hands nowadays," said William Olson, an Army veteran who lives on the block.

There was a heavy police presence near the shooting scene Tuesday as police made no bones about the fact they were guarding against possible retaliation in this neighborhood.

"It's gonna be there," Bland predicted "I know that for a fact. Somewhere along the line I know it's gonna be there. I've been here too long. History repeats itself."

The sudden rash of violence comes when murders are down almost 30 percent this year. But that's no solace to residents who live on this street. It looked like a war zone Monday night.

The war zone quickly transformed into a play street by Tuesday morning.

"There's kids that play on this block," Olson said. "This could have happened during the day."

"Don't protect part of the city, protect all of the city," Bland said.

Police say someone in the neighborhood needs to step up and identify the shooters.

"The murders are down, but it's just indicative of the fact that we have a lot of work to do and we need people's help," said Deputy Police Commissioner Richard Ross.

For Herman Bland and his family, the violence can't end soon enough.

"I'm tired. I'm tired man. I'm tired of seeing it," Bland added.

Homicide investigators say they have no leads and no suspects in the triple shooting on Taylor Street. Residents in the neighborhood are not cooperating with authorities. But police do have some leads in a double shooting on Percy Street.

Investigators also continue to work on leads in the murder of 19-year-old Daquan Crump, who was shot 10 times in the head Monday morning. His body was dumped at a construction site in Somerton. Police say an arrest could come any time now.

Police have now identified the murder victim in that triple shooting on 1700 block of Taylor Street last night. He is 17-year-old Nasir Slaughter from the 1800 block of Ringold, just half a block way from crime scene.
