CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart says the county jail is running out of space and they're running out of time to solve the problem.

The sheriff says there are almost 10,200 inmates in the jail currently—the highest inmate population in almost six years. That's up almost four percent in just the past week and a half.

The county is renting more than 200 beds in downstate jails to try to ease the crowding, but Dart says if the trend continues, the success of the county's legal system could be in jeopardy.
