Superheroes Wash Windows At Mattel Children's Hospital

Westwood, CA -

Her name is Abigale and when I first spotted her in the crowd of kids at Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA today her mouth was wide open; forming a perfect circle of innocent awe as she stared at Batman, Captain America and Spiderman.

Oh, the look on her face! Talk about priceless!

You could tell she wanted to fly out of her mother's arms and run to see the super-heroes up close but she couldn't because the pretty little girl from Lamont was tethered to an oxygen tank and medical machinery I can't even begin to describe.

Did I mention she's only four?

Abigale has been at Mattel for the last week being treated for a pulmonary condition, her mother Megen told me. Being in the hospital is hard enough for an adult, imagine what it's like for a child.

That's why today, the Chase Child Life Program sponsored "Super Window Washers" where real life window washers, dressed up as super-heroes, entertained the kids by, what else, washing windows!

Laughter is the best medicine after all and the kids loved it. And little Abigale was no exception. During my ten o'clock live-shot I asked her who her favorite super hero was and she said "Batman".

So when Super Window-Washer Batman came down, I asked him to pose for a picture with Abigale and she was thrilled when I took it for her (see pic above)

A little later, I caught up with the mother and daughter duo to interview them again, this time for our later shows, and now that she had met the masked crusaders in person, I once again asked Abby who of the three was her favorite.

Her response surprised me – if only for a second - and then brought tears.

"Mommy"

"Mommy is your favorite super-hero?"

"Yes"

Abby's super-hero doesn't wear a costume or a mask, although she probably does wash windows along with the many other magical things moms do.

Abby's super-hero is her Mommy. It is as simple as that.

And in an era where the word "hero" is so often misused, overused and abused it was refreshing to hear a four year old define the word properly and call it as she saw it.

So, here's to heroes, super and otherwise.

Here's to Abby's mommy, Megen.

Here's to all the amazing moms, dads, doctors, nurses and kids I met today at Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA. You are all heroes in my book!

And here's to Abby. May your life be happy and healthy; filled with lots of love and laughter.
