Escaped 7-Foot Boa Constrictor 'Snakey' Has Been Found

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -

Police say a boa constrictor that went missing more than a week ago has been located.

Swarthmore police confirm that "Snakey" was found in the backyard of a residence on the 300 Vassar Avenue and recovered without incident or injuries to anyone involved.

The 23-year-old snake, which belongs to veterinarian Dr. David Spiegel, went missing around 5 p.m. on Aug. 11 from its Park Avenue address in this Delaware County community.

The boa constrictor had been last seen catching some sun in these shrubs near the air-conditioning unit, one of its favorite hangouts.

Spiegel described his "son" as a docile, domesticated snake who loves pets and people. He shared pictures of his two daughters playing with the snake when they were younger, and even said Snakey and the two family cats get along.

But that didn't ease neighbors' concerns, especially after recent news reports that two Canadian kids were killed when a python escaped from a pet store.

While boas are said to be less aggressive than pythons and constrict on small prey when they're hungry, most people in the neighborhood weren't taking any chances.

This wasn't the first time Snakey had gotten away. He escaped about a year ago and was found a block away in a neighbors' yard.

The chief of police says it's legal for people in Swarthmore to have exotic pets like boa constrictors.
