White House Awards Medal Of Honor To Ty Michael Carter

WASHINGTON, D.C. -

President Obama awarded the Medal of Honor to an army soldier for going above the call of duty during his service in Afghanistan.

Staff Sergeant Ty Michael Carter became the fifth living recipient to be awarded the nation's highest military decoration. The army says that in 2009, Carter was under fire when he killed enemy troops and helped his division triumph over a Taliban force eight times their size. Carter also braved intense enemy fire and risked his life to save an injured soldier. The soldier later died in surgery after Carter got him to safety.

Carter was joined by his wife and three children and forty members of his family at the white house ceremony.

President Obama spoke at the ceremony:

Before they came, Ty said he was hoping to take his children around Washington to show them the sites and the history. But Jaden, Madison[,] if you want to know what makes our country truly great, if you want to know what a true American hero looks like then you don't have to look too far. You just have to look at your dad, because today he is the site we've come to see. Your dad inspires us just like those big monuments and memorials do. This is a historic day. The first time in nearly half a century since the Vietnam war that we've been able to present the medal of honor to two survivors of the same battle.

Carter, diagnosed with PTSD, hopes to use the honor to help other soldiers who suffer from post-traumatic stress by motivating them to seek help.
