Single older men becoming dads through surrogacy

Single older men becoming dads through surrogacy

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

There is nothing like being a dad. Those stroller rides, the shoulder carries, or on this afternoon, for Steven Harris and his son Ben, 6, a conversation about what to wear.

For Harris, a 58-year-old bachelor who never married but always wanted to have kids, becoming a dad wasn't easy. He tried adopting, but was told he was too old.

So like a growing number of single straight men over the age of 50, he turned to surrogacy. Harris was 52 by the time Ben was born.

But the process can be expensive. One company told the AP that dads seeking surrogates should budget for about $150,000. That includes $10,000 for an egg donor and $25,000 for a surrogate mother who will give birth after being impregnated with an implanted embryo.

Dr. Nava Silton, a psychology professor at Marymount Manhattan College, said that with the right support, single dads like Steven can successfully raise a child.

"These are parents who are motivated to create a wonderful environment for children," she said. "As long as their motivated to do that and have financial stability to do that. Everything else can be filled in."

Harris said Ben is an easy kid, so he is lucky in that sense. He also said he is open and honest with Ben.

"I talk to Ben all the time about how he was born and where he was born," he said. Harris said being a dad came naturally.

We all yawn, but why we do it has long been a mysterious phenomenon. Turns out scientists have disproved the old "getting oxygen to our brain" theory. While we often yawn when we're sleepy, it may not be the sleepiness that's causing the yawn. "It's not surprising that there's a heightened level of yawning associated with being sleepy," says Dr. Andrew Gallup, an assistant professor of psychology at SUNY Oneonta and a leading researcher on the subject of yawning.
