Down the Drain: $800 fine for SCS homeowner over new water meter

Down the Drain: $800 fine for SCS homeowner over new water meter

SAINT CLAIR SHORES, Mich. (WJBK) -

All Saint Clair Shores homeowners must get new water meters. The city is pushing for a newer, more modern model - one that transmits the reading to city hall via a radio frequency. This would eliminate the need for meter readers to visit the homes.

But homeowner Mike Cook isn't okay with the new system.

"I just don't feel that I want something that sends a radio signal in my house," he tells Fox 2's Amy Lange.

So, the city gave Cook the option to still get a new meter - it just doesn't have the wireless hookup. Assistant City Manager, Mike Smith, tells us he understands not everyone will want the new wireless system, but it will save the city $125,000 a year. So for those who don't want to switch, an arrangement can be made.

The city says those homeowners can opt out of the wireless system, but it will cost $40 a year ($10 a quarter) to have someone still come to the house and check the reading.

Cook tells us he's fine with that.

But, when he went to sign the contract, he saw something he was not okay with - a clause that says the city can raise that $40 rate at any time.

So, Cook refused to sign the contract.

Then the city sent him a notice, saying he would be ticketed for not making an appointment to get the new water meter - a ticket costing $800.

But Cook did, in fact, make an appointment. It was at that appointment he refused to sign the contract.

Smith says the ticket has not crossed in the mail, and Cook has not yet been given the penalty.
