80-year-old man accused of killing daughter

Man, 80, accused of killing daughter, wounding great-grandson

UNION COUNTY, Ga. -

Investigators say a former police officer killed his daughter and wounded his great-grandson at the family's home in Union County early Sunday.

Authorities say Frank Miller held police at bay for several hours Sunday morning before SWAT officers stormed his home and took the 80-year-old into custody.

The retired police officer is accused of killing his daughter and wounding his great grandson following an argument.

Union County Sheriff Mack Mason said his deputies and the Fannin County Sheriff's SWAT team were dispatched to Miller's residence near Blairsville after Miller's daughter, 59-year-old Collen Grant, placed a call to 911 from the residence on Miller Cove Road around 1 a.m. Sunday morning.

Mason said that Miller's great-grandson was outside when officers arrived. He'd been shot in the leg. The teen told police that Miller shot his grandmother several times.

"He gave us a good layout of the house, who was in the house, that the only living person in the house was his great-grandfather," said Mason.

Mason said Miller was arrested in 2011 in Union County for failure to maintain lane and contempt of court stemming from a civil matter.

Just last month, one of Mason's deputies was called to Miller's home on another matter and noted a large cache of firearms at the residence.

"There were approximately 40 firearms that we removed from the resident for safekeeping and they tell me that all of them were loaded," Mason said.  "So this could've have been a really bad situation – a worse situation than what we had."

Miller is being held at the Union County jail. He faces malice murder and aggravated assault charges.  He is scheduled to have his first court appearance sometime this week.

Miller's great-grandson is recovering from his injuries. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is assisting in the case.
