Vigil held for women killed in Fulton County crash

SMYRNA, Ga. -

Friends and family gathered on Monday to remember the victims of a fatal crash in Fulton County.

Shanecia Bowen and Nikinjee Barnes were in the backseat of a car that flipped several times on Interstate 20 near Fulton Industrial Boulevard on Friday morning. The crash threw both women from the car and killed them. The driver, Nikinjee's uncle, was critically injured.

Bowen, 25, was the mother of 4-year-old Saniyah and 1-year-old Latham. Her family said she had a lot to live for. They're now raising money for the children and for funeral expenses.

"She was my best friend, she was everyone's protector. She loved everything and she loved everybody," said Taniesha Bowen, Shanecia's sister. "She was just the sweetest person in the world."

Hundreds of red balloons were released Monday in memory of Bowen held at a neighborhood park in Smyrna.

"She just loved life and it was senseless for her to be taken away from us like this," said Felicia Ford.

Some members of Shanecia's family believe the driver, Sherrod Barnes, should face charges. Police say they are still investigating.

"I want justice. It was not time for her to leave, she had two kids," said Taniesha Bowen. "She was a great mother -- it just was not time for her to go."

Nikinjee's aunt was also in the car and injured in the crash, but she's expected to be OK.
