ROSEVILLE, Mich. (WJBK) -

A 36-year old motorcyclist is dead after police say he crashed into a protective wall and fencing on the eastbound I-696 overpass at 11 Mile Road.

Roseville police say the 36-year old Warren man suffered massive head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash after midnight Tuesday. His passenger, a 24-year old woman from St. Clair Shores, is hospitalized with critical head injuries.

Officers say neither the driver nor his passenger were wearing helmets.

The Roseville Police Major Crash Investigation Team believes the driver exited the freeway at an extremely high rate of speed, lost control and crashed into the wall and fence that are on the bend in the roadway at the top of the ramp.

It is unknown if alcohol was a factor in the crash.
