With consumer frustration mounting over quality problems, Chobani Inc., of upstate New York, is now voluntarily recalling some of its Greek yogurt products. Thousands of consumers have complained of bloated and swollen containers with spoiled yogurt inside.
The company said it is investigating the root cause of the quality problems, but CEO Hamid Ulukaya said a mold commonly found in dairy facilities was the likely culprit. He said that the mold became a problem because Chobani doesn't use preservatives in its products, the AP reported.
The recall, which affects products shipped from its Idaho facility, is voluntary and was only announced Thursday. Up until now, consumers had been flooding the company's Facebook page with complaints saying that Chobani had not been communicating with either them or retailers fast enough. The company had said most of the recalled products had been pulled from shelves, but many commentators on its Facebook complained that their local shops were still carrying the spoiled yogurt and weren't even aware of the unofficial (and now official) recall.
The recalled products have best by date codes of "Sep 11 –13" to "Oct 07-13" (four-digit time stamp) and an IMS code of 16-012. These are the cup sizes:
If you have purchased any of the recalled yogurt cups, you should throw them away, Chobani said. You can try to contact customer service at chobani.com/care or 877-847-6181, but the web traffic has been so heavy that the site appears to be suffering outages.
"The quality of Chobani products and the trust of its consumers are the company's primary concern, and it sincerely apologizes to its consumers impacted by this issue," the company said in a statement. "Chobani holds itself to the highest standards and is committed to fully transparent and decisive action to rectify any identified issues."
