Golf tournament held in honor of fallen APD officer

ATLANTA -

The family of an Atlanta police officer killed in a helicopter crash is helping other officers become pilots.

Officers Richard Halford, 48, and Shawn Smiley, 40, were killed when their APD helicopter crashed in southwest Atlanta last November.

Halford's parents joined others on Friday to host the Richard J. Halford Legacy Golf Tournament at the Wolf Creek Golf Club.

The tournament raised money for Atlanta police officers who wish to pursue a career in aviation.

They say this is a great way for Richard's message to live on.

"Whatever your walk in life, never give up. And whatever you do, be the best of whatever you are. Do it with passion," said Richard's mother.  "Do it as if it might be your last day, because as in his case, it was, but he did it and he did it very well."
