Surgery is underway for Uncle Jon, a U.S. Army vet donating a kidney, and Ethan Hamilton, an 8-year-old boy receiving the gift of a lifetime, at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston Tuesday.

FOX 5 Atlanta's Carolyn Ryan reports that as of 9 a.m., Jon Erikson was doing well with his part of the surgery, having the kidney removed. However, a blood clot had been found with Ethan. Hospital officials said the clot needed to be resolved before they could proceed with the surgery.

Ethan, who suffers from a rare disease called Eagle-Barrett syndrome, has been in and out of the hospital since he was born. Tuesday is a day that he has indeed been waiting for all of his life.

"It's basically, his stomach has no muscles….basically, they've had to reconstruct his stomach," said Nancy Erikson, the boy's aunt. The 8-year-old has been on dialysis since last January and was in desperate need of a healthy kidney.

While no one in Ethan's immediate family was a match, Nancy says she noticed her husband, Jon, and Ethan had the same blood type. She almost didn't have to ask. Without a second thought, Jon says he decided to give one of his kidneys to Ethan.

"I'm not special at all. I'm just doing what people should do if they have the opportunity," Jon said.
