MCDONOUGH, Ga. -

An Air Force veteran who fought his homeowners association so he could fly the U.S. flag was honored by a local restaurant on Tuesday.

John Helton, 91, said that his HOA threatened to fine him up to $25 a day if he kept the flag displayed outside his home.  The HOA said that the flag was a violation of the community's covenants.

After Helton's fight made national headlines, residents in the community voted to allow him to fly the flag fine-free.

On Tuesday, Helton was honored as a "Hometown Hero" by the O'Charley's restaurant in McDonough.

Helton will carry the flag in the 9/11 ceremony in McDonough on Wednesday.
