Futures mixed in very light trading

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (AP) -- U.S stock futures are mixed in very light trading, with many investors head to the sidelines before the Fed's policy statement next week.

There are jobs and deficit numbers due Thursday.

Dow Jones industrial futures are down 9 points to 15,321. S&P futures have lost 1.4 points to 1,687.40. Nasdaq futures are up 1.25 points to 3,179.75.

Economists expect that the Labor Department will report an uptick last week in the number of people seeking unemployment benefits, though figures remain near five-year lows.

The Treasury is expected to report that the U.S. deficit shrank noticeably last month.

Yet with less than a week before the U.S. Federal Reserve releases its monthly statement and projections, most of the chatter on Wall Street is about what direction the Fed will take.

Studies: office layout can affect your mental and physical health

Leaving the office, most of us feel pretty exhausted. Studies now suggest that we can blame much of what ails us physically and mentally on the layout of our workspace. American companies standardized the sprawling square room divided by cubicles or nothing to foster team atmosphere. But newer research suggests that the open-plan office actually raises stress while lowering motivation and focus and maybe even reducing life-expectancy.
