Georgia DOT fixing traffic signals to save time, money

ATLANTA -

You know those frustrating roads where if you hit one red traffic light, then you hit them all? The Georgia Department of Transportation is working to repair several major areas in metro Atlanta by improving the light. The goal is to save drivers both time and money.

SKYFOX Traffic's Katie Beasley took a look at one area where these efforts are already paying off. The DOT and Perimeter Community Improvement District have been working to time our all of the traffic signals around Perimeter Mall. The goal is to keep traffic flowing as much as possible.

You still may have to dodge the occasional geese and stew in heavy traffic along on Ashford-Dunwoody Road. But, at the moment, traffic lights dot the streets surrounding Perimeter Mall.

DOT spokesperson Mark McKinnon said, "We've got to look at new, innovative ways to move traffic through these corridors that have so much traffic on them."

Since expanding the lanes is not always an option, Georgia DOT is partnering with PCMD to better time out each of the traffic lights.

McKinnon says GDOT is seeing a lot of success with the Perimeter Mall area that's saving drivers a lot of time and a lot of money with less idling at lights. It's also likely helping the local environment, too.

Georgia DOT also has plans to bring the Regional Traffic Operations Program to other busy roads.

"They did 99 signals here in the Perimeter area," McKinnon said. "But, we're looking at more than 900 across metro Atlanta – including Tara Boulevard, Roswell Road, Covington Highway, Memorial Drive."

Studies show a 29 percent drop in a vehicle's average stop time at a traffic signal.

The Perimeter Traffic Operations Program was funded partially by a 2.8 million grant from the Georgia DOT. It also includes extended turn lanes, intersection improvements and fiber optic upgrades.

As a result of the new timing plans, motorists using the corridors during the morning, noon and evening peak periods will save 233,680 hours of travel time and 160,290 gallons of gasoline each year because of improved traffic flow.
