Teen, 17, arrested for woman's death in Austell shootout

AUSTELL, GA. -

A 17-year-old is under arrest for allegedly fatally shooting a concerned neighbor who was cut down in the crossfire of a local dispute Monday night.

Cobb County police charged Khalil Kelly, of Austell, with murder and aggravated assault in connection with the shooting death of 47-year-old Deirdre Smith.  Police say he's being held without bond at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center.

Cobb Co. Police Officer Mike Bowman did not go into any further details regarding Kelly's arrest.

The deadly gunfire in question broke out in a cul-de-sac on Oakhill Circle in Austell late Monday. It left Smith dead at the scene, as well as several children hurt and hospitalized for minor injuries.

Cobb police say an ongoing feud between two women somehow escalated into two men exchanging gunfire. Police say Smith, the mother of two children and grandmother to three, intervened to try to end the violence. Instead, she ended up being shot and dying.

Friends and family remembered Smith as a caring person and a good neighbor.

Smith's daughter, Sakima Jules, said that she's wasn't surprised to hear her mother tried to help stop the dispute.

"She would try to diffuse the situation and she loved and prayed for people and it didn't shock me that she would have been out here trying to break it up, but she that had to be taken in the process is really hard," said Jules.

A makeshift memorial was created in Smith's honor near her home.
