Navy Yard encourages employees to telecommute

Posted: Updated:

The U.S. Navy says the Washington Navy Yard that was the scene of a shooting rampage will open for business for Mission Essential personnel.

In a posting on its Facebook page, the Navy says the yard remains an active crime scene. It will be open for business on Wednesday, and employees are urged to telecommute.

Access to Building 197 is prohibited. That is where Aaron Alexis fatally shot 12 people before he killed by police Monday.

The Navy also said beginning at 9 a.m. Wednesday, several garages and all surface parking lots will be open for members to get their private vehicles and remove them. However, officials urged employees to stagger their times to retrieve their cars, lest there be a rush to get cars out.
