LA's Mayor Eric Garcetti: I Want To Build A Bridge To Both Sides

LA's Mayor Eric Garcetti: I Want To Build A Bridge To Both Sides

Posted: Updated:

Mayor Eric Garcetti talked to Steve about several big issues Thursday morning, including mounting tensions between Los Angeles Unified's top administrators and the school board. He was also quick to support the job Superintendent John Deasy has done.

"I think John Deasy has been a great leader. I think he's helped us move test scores forward, we have fewer dropouts...but I think teachers also need to be at the table. I don't want that to come at the expense of his career. I think if we get into a search for the next year for a new superintendent were he to leave, that would be a bad sign for progress here..."

The Mayor says he wants to sit down with those involved and make it very clear what the biggest priority is.

"I want to be a Mayor that builds a bridge between these two supposed sides because I think if you took the most strident union activist and the biggest "reformer" and asked them to describe what a good campus looks like, we all know what those ingredients are like...let's fight about the things we want to fight about on the side but let's stop making those issues dominate the educational debate. That's where I'm going to put my time and energy."

Steve also asked him about L.A. being an industry town and how he plans to keep film and TV production from shooting elsewhere.

"Next month, we're going to have the City Council voting on my legislation to make filming television pilots free in the city of Los Angeles. If they get picked up and they film here, we'll make the first season free as well...I'll be hiring a film czar soon...whether it's troubleshooting a shoot that's here...or getting the tax credits that we already have in the state of California expanded, in other words the amount of them is too small. Our credit doesn't go to a single movie star, a single rich producer, it goes to those folks below the line."

Steve also asked him about recent comments he made about being for military action in Syria.

"It was in response to a question, it's certainly nothing I'm spending much of my time and energy on. ..I think the use of chemical weapons, just personally, not as Mayor, made me take that position. The city of L.A. took no stand, that's in the hands of our military professionals."

With football season is full swing, Steve also asked Mayor Garcetti about the future of an NFL team in L.A.

"I think it's good for us to have a football team, as a fan I'd love to have one...we've said to the NFL we're not going to put taxpayer money into this...it has to be guaranteed by the stadium itself and whoever wants to bring the team, in that sense we've played hardball...that's been in the taxpayers interest but I think that it's finally laid the foundation."

Fun Facts About Mayor Garcetti:
