Plans in place to transform Lower East Side

Plans in place to transform Lower East Side

Posted: Updated:

What is likely one of Mayor Michael Bloomberg's final initiatives as mayor will bring a fresh look to Manhattan's Lower East Side

Bloomberg, who will finish his third term in office in just over 100 days, said the Seward Park area near Essex and Delancey streets will become a 1.65 million-square-foot mixed use development.

Affordable housing, a school, community center, rooftop urban farm and an Andy Warhol Museum are among the sites planned for the area.

Bloomberg told reporters at a news conference Wednesday that his administration continues to work as hard as it can.

The mayor took exception to a comment by a reporter who suggested that the project would be one of his last.

"Why would you assume that? You probably wrote that after the second term we wouldn't do anything," said Bloomberg.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
