Fulton County police, SWAT upgrade war on crime

Posted: Updated:
FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -

The Fulton County Police Department is getting an upgrade on the gear it uses to fight crime on a daily basis. Police say the new tools in their arsenal are designed to keep both officers and residents safe.

While they couldn't show Good Day Atlanta's Tacoma Perry everything, the goal with using the added muscle is to be smarter, quicker and better equipped than the bad guys.

When Fulton County police officers have to go into a dangerous situation, they need heavy-duty protection, police said.

Fulton Co. Police Captain Wade Yates said, "Active shooters have become pretty prevalent in the country and this is a vehicle that we can get into a situation like that and get people out safely."

The police departments newest vehicle – called a Bearcat – comes will all of the bells and whistles.

Yates said, "It does have a Ram on the front that can be attached to open doors. It has run-flat tires. The structure itself will stop any rifle round."

Noting a bullet mark in the hull, the Bearcat's bullet-blocking capacity appears to have already have been tested.

What else is the Fulton PD adding to it arsenal?
